JOCKEY DOUGIE COSTELLO ANSWERS THE CROWD RACING QUESTIONS

Jockey Dougie Costello has ridden a lot for Crowd Racing in the past 6 months, and won on Born To Finish at Kempton at the end of 2017.

Initially a jumps jockey, Dougie now rides predominantly on the flat. He has ridden more than over 300 winners over the sticks, and is fast approaching a century on the flat.

Dougie Costello has been a great sport and answered The Crowd Racing Questions, his responses are below.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST ACHIEVEMENT AS A JOCKEY TO DATE?

I’ve been very lucky in my career in racing, for me it’s always about getting the best from your horse, and like humans it’s normally giving them confidence!
I could say Triumph Hurdles, Tote Gold Hurdle, Monets Garden at Aintree or Quiet Reflection at Royal Ascot. But most of the time it’s when a plan comes off ie: Ascot, Chelmsford, Cheltenham, Redcar!

  FAVOURITE ALL TIME HORSE?

This is a hard one!

JUMPS HORSE; in my time this has to be Kauto Star , just to keep coming back to the big days at Cheltenham can cap what any other good horse has done. Watching him and Denman take each other on at the top of the hill was hairs on the back of the neck stuff, I was sitting on the table in the weighting room with all the other lads and this was the fight everyone had wanted to see and we got it. Sad to say that Denman never really came back from that fight, maybe neither of them came back from it! But race was what jump racing is all about!

FLAT HORSE; Galileo, again “heart on his sleeve” on the day George Duffield won on him, just brilliant!
PERSONALLY; it’s a horse called Kings Quay, wasn’t an easy horse when first came to John Quinn, were I was based and I did a lot of work with him along with another of the lads, it was about his confidence! He was like a bully but that was just a front, once we got inside his head he won for me; a handicap on National day, Summer Hurdle, Elite Hurdle & a good novice chase even though he wasn’t very big & had to be dropped right on the line. All of his hurdle wins were necks, short heads & noses! For a rider to be able to watch the race unfold in front of you and you are holding the Ace cards, it’s a great feeling. When it works 🙏🏇🍾🍾 !!
TAME DEER was another horse I fell in love with at the age of 11 !
In my first yard, I worked in Mattie O’Tootles in the West of Ireland and we had about 15 horses & the trainer who was there left when I was about 14yrs old. It was right in the summer and as Mattie was a business man & the yard was a hobby, he was brave and left me and another lad for a month with the horses! Tame deer had very bad joints, so every evening I would rub Poitín, a famous Irish spirit, into his joints & rap them in a damp pad!
I can just say the cycle home to my grans was never a straight line !! My gran used to go mad at first until I filled her in on the story! Then it was all fine!
Tame Deer went to Galway September meet with a great draw 5 of 18 runners! Joints were great and had a young jockey by the name of Neil P Mulholland on board!! It was a foggy day special in the dip at Galway, TD jumps great 5 off inside rail into to the fog and then comes out of the Fog and I can’t see him in a line of horses right across the track! The judge calls a photo because there are short heads between 10 of them!
The winner is Tame Deer, he came up the stand side rail & won! How Neil got him all the across there from box 5, who knows! Great ride & a great winner!!
It was great because I felt every feeling that afternoon! Me & Neil are still good friends & Neil gave me some great days are Cheltenham on Midnight Chase & some great winners at the start of his career as a trainer and I have to say Neil is a 100 times better trainer then a jockey!

WHY MAKE THE MOVE FROM JUMPS TO FLAT?

I wasn’t getting any younger and everything I got broke up ( in hospital with a injury) I’d always be light very light as jump jockeys would go and I was after riding William Muir some nice winners and for Paul & Jo Hughes that summer in France. Mr Burke offered me a great chance and I felt that it was to good to turn down. My nerves weren’t gone over jumps, I just burned myself out riding out everywhere and riding for everyone and this was something new and great and I could put all my energy into one yard rather than 10 yards like jumping! Thank God it worked!! 4 Group races , one Listed winner & I felt we had a great campaign with what we had.

WHICH HORSE CURRENTLY IN TRAINING WOULD YOU MOST LIKE TO RIDE?

There lots of horses!  I think just to feel the true speed I’d have to say Wesley Ward’s Good sprinter Lady Aurellia.

WHICH RACE YOU WOULD LIKE TO WIN THE MOST?

Again so many! Another Cheltenham Festival race such as the Champion Chase or Gold Cup , Grand National , The Derby ( which I was lucky enough to ride in) or any classic race ! I am definitely not greedy me!!!

FAVOURITE RACE COURSE?

Jumping: Wetherby! I have been the leading young rider and senior rider there and it was only 20mins from me!!

Flat; Deauville France. It is absolutely beautiful,  with great prize money,  food, drinks , cheap entry and a lovely track to race on.

WHAT IRKS YOU MOST IN RACING?

Prize money in UK, it’s getting a bit better but nothing like where it should be, and after riding a Royal Ascot winner from a syndicate, I’d love to see more Syndicates winning Group Races, or a Classic at the big meetings.

WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST POSITIVE CHANGE IN RECENT RACING?

Horse care and staff getting pool money. The stable staff work very hard in racing and I think more can be done for that.

WHAT IS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE FACED BY RACING?

To stop racing to be all about betting and a prize money increase . I know Yorkshire racing is trying to promote family’s days out at tracks which is a great initiative.

WHICH WILL BE THE MOST INTERESTING HORSE TO FOLLOW FROM YOUR RIDES THIS SEASON?

 Hopefully them all.

HOPEFULLY IT IS A LONG WAY OFF, BUT WHAT DO YOU SEE YOURSELF DOING ONCE YOU RETIRE FROM THE SADDLE?

Getting fat! I don’t real know! I’d like to stay some way in racing but I don’t think I’d like to trainer. May be young stock & pointers.

Welcome to Crowd Racing

Crowd Racing is one of the UK’s most innovative Racehorse Ownership and Experience companies.

We offer ownership shares in racehorses and racehorse ownership experiences in the UK and Europe, via our "Crowds".

By joining a Crowd, you will become a registered owner of that racehorse for a fixed period of time, for a fixed cost. At the end of the period, you will get to vote on whether we keep the horse(s) but you will never be committed to remaining as part of that Crowd, irrespective of the vote result.

Crowd Racing offers various ownership packages on a transparent, one-off cost basis with no hidden charges.

Depending on the level of package purchased, share owners received a variety of racehorse owner benefits; All owners are entitled to their pro-rata share of prize-money and re-sale of the horse at the end of the defined period.

We also offer a totally free to join Racing Club, The Crowd Racing Club

A whole lot of fun!

While we will always strive to buy racehorses for our owners which will win races and increase in value, the costs involved in training and running a racehorse plus the relatively low levels of prize money in the UK, make showing an upside on the initial investment made by owners very difficult and somewhat rare.

Shares bought in horses via Crowd Racing, should always be viewed as a social investment with no expectation of any financial upside. We can guarantee you will love being involved and have some wonderful experiences but we cannot guarantee you will make money.
